7:30 PM - Saturday, August 12, 2017
Join MTRP Trail Guide and amateur astronomer, George Varga, at the far end of the Kumeyaay Lake Campground's Day Use Parking Lot, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. A telescope will be available to view the nighttime sky! In consideration of others, no lanterns or white-light flashlights are permitted near the telescope. * Note: Cancelled if raining or cloudy.
The Moon will be about five days after being Full and approaching Last Quarter Phase. Planet Saturn will be well positioned for viewing while Jupiter is setting in the West. The Perseid Meteor Shower will be at its peak so with some luck, we will see a few meteors when not looking though the telescope. The Ring Nebula (M57) in Lyra, the Hercules Cluster (M13) in Hercules, Globular Cluster M22 and the Lagoon Nebula (M8) in Sagittarius, and the Dumbbell Nebula (M27) will be viewed, city light pollution permitting.
