Guided Nature Walk
9:30 AM - Saturday, October 20, 2007
1.5 hours
Join a Trail Guide on a nature walk from the Visitor Center and learn about the history, geology, plants, animals, and ecology of the park. Trail Guides choose from three trails. The Oak Grove Trail leads to small oak woodland with majestic coast live oaks and rare Engelmann oaks. The Visitor Center Loop Trail takes you through coastal sage scrub, chaparral, and riparian woodland habitats. The Riverside Grinding Site Trail leads to one of the archeological sites in the park-grinding rocks used by the Kumeyaay Indians for food preparation. Walks may also include the Native Plant Garden near the building. These interpretive nature walks are offered to enhance your appreciation of our open space and the unique beauty of San Diego’s natural environment. Walks are free, open to the public with no reservations required, and will accommodate the physical or special needs of the group. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. A hat and sunscreen are recommended. Walk canceled if raining.
Star Party
6:30 PM - Saturday, October 20, 2007
2.5 hours
Join resident star gazer, George Varga, and his telescope at the Kumeyaay Lake Campground to view the night time sky. Meet at the far end of the Day Use Parking Lot (weather permitting).
The moon will be waxing and one day past First Quarter. The Summer Triangle will be overhead, slightly to the West of the Meridian so views of Albireo, a binary star, the Ring Nebula (M57) and the Dumbbell Nebula (M27) will be favorable. The Hercules Cluster (M13), slightly to the West, should still be nice to view. Jupiter will be low in the Southwest. The Double Cluster in Perseus and the Andromedia Galaxy (M31) will be rising in the East.
In consideration of others, no white light flashlights or lanterns near the telescope, please.
Dates/Times: October 20, 6:30-9 p.m. November 17, 5-8 p.m. December 15, 5-8 p.m.
